Troubleshooting

Website unavailable: what to check

A safe sequence of first checks when a website cannot be reached or shows an error.

Record what happened

Note the website address, when the issue started and the exact error message. Check whether it also happens in another browser or network. This helps identify a local or wider problem.

Safe first checks

  1. Check the address

Make sure the domain is spelled correctly and opens the intended version of the site.

  2. Check the domain and DNS

If you recently changed DNS, allow time for the update. Compare the settings with the verified details for your service.

  3. Check HTTPS

Try the site over HTTP and HTTPS and note whether the error changes. Do not disable browser security checks.

  4. Review recent changes

Note any recent changes to files, the CMS, domain settings or website code. Do not delete files or databases during initial troubleshooting.

  5. Contact support

If the issue persists, send support the URL, time, exact error and a summary of recent changes.

Verify the result

  • You recorded the exact address and error message.
  • You checked whether the issue also happens on another network or for other visitors.
  • Recent changes and their timing are documented.
